Otar Iosseliani was born in Tbilisi (Georgia), where he studied at the State Conservatory and graduated in 1952. In 1953 he went to Moscow to study at the faculty of mathematics, but in two years he entered the State Film Institute (VGIK). In 1958 he directed his first short film . Iosseliani's first full-length motion picture, GIORGOBISTVE, won a FIPRESCI-prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Despite of the international recognition maestro’s films were not allowed in the Soviet Union. His film PASTORALI was not released, but disappeared for several years in the Soviet archives. After the success of PASTORALI at the Berlin Film Festival in 1982 he emigrated from the Soviet Union to France. There were filmed such his masterpieces as LES FAVORIS DE LA LUNE, UN PETIT MONASTERE EN TOSCANE, LA CHASSE AUX PAPILLONS and LUNDI MATI. Nowadays Otar Ioseliani lives and works in France.
