II Kiev International Film Festival held from May 25 to June 1, 2010
From 25 May to 1 June 2010 Kiev International Film Festival took place in Kiev for the second time, aimed to become the central film forum of the world and national film premieres in Ukraine. The initiator and president of the festival is the People's Artist of Ukraine, an outstanding actor Bogdan Stupka.
Film Forum II significantly exceeded the debut as for the scopes and number of outstanding stars of the world cinema, who have visited the film festival. The program of the festival has expanded and comprised almost 100 pictures from 40 countries worldwide. During 8-days the festival pampered Kiev citizens with meetings with popular stars: Hollywood actor, Oscar prize winner - Adrien Brody, a charming girl, famous Ukrainian, James Bond’s companion - Olga Kurylenko, lighting "Asian criminal" - Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa; respected Russian film director, actor and screenwriter - Stanislav Govorukhin, American “Starship Trooper” - Casper Van Dien, Japanese cinema legend, beloved actress of Akura Kurosawa - Mieko Harada, as well as the star personalities among the members of the jury.
The jury of the competition program in 2010 was represented by such famous names as: the winner of the Cannes, Venice and Berlin film festivals Otar Iosseliani, the director Vadim Perelman (the USA), an outstanding Russian actor Armen Djigarkhanyan, Ukrainian painter and art director Sergei Yakutovich, a worldwidely recognized documentary filmmaker , the member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Marcel Lozinski (Poland); a significant Hungarian film director, screenwriter and producer Martha Messarosh, the famous Turkish director Aydin Cyman, authoritative film critics Alec Shpilyuk (Ukraine), Elena Stishova (Russia), Sergei Rachlin (the USA).
In addition, guests and participants of the Kiev Film Festival II were: Oleg Taktarov (the USA, Russia), Alexei Serebryakov (Russia), Anatoly Zhuravlev (Russia), David Silva, Eduardo Contreras (Chile), Tashdiken Atalay (Turkey), Natalia Bondarchuk (Russia) , Erken Yalgashev (the USA), Vadim Dubrovyts'kyi (Russia), Villen Novak (Ukraine), Irina Tokarchuk (Ukraine), Eileen Nicholas (the UK) and many other representatives of the world film industry.
15 Main Competition films competed for the “Best Feature Film "nomination, KMKF II Grand Prix and 20 000 U.S. premium. All members of the jury unanimously voted for the Turkish film "The Bogeyman" (Mommo / The Bogeyman, director Atalay Tashdiken), narrating about the hard destiny of two orphans, whose mother died and whose father left for another woman. Can the nine-year-old boy be an elder brother, father, mother and an inspirator for both at the same time? For the young Aisha the answer is "yes", in this could be assured thousands of spectators who attended the festive closing ceremony and had the opportunity to evaluate the best festival picture with their own eyes.
Besides the main prize, the director Atalay Tashdiken took home another award - for the “Best Supporting Actor”. The grandfather of the two unfortunate children, a disabled person as on the screen so in life, the actor Mete Donmezer deservedly won this award.
The favorits of the main competition program have become films "Vortex" (Duburys / Vortrex, director. Gytis Lukshas, Lithuania), which won the award for the best camerawork and the best leading female role, and "Dark House" (Dark house / Dom zly, director. Wojciech Smarzhovski, Poland) - Best Directing and script. With the prize for the “Best Suppprting Actress” was awarded the actress Eileen Nicholas, who played in the film "Bomber" (Bomber, director. Paul Cotter, the UK).
At the award ceremony the actor Yuri Stepanov was honoured with the minute’s silence, whose last role was recognized as the "Best leading male role" in the film "Shoot now!" (Director. Villen Novak, Ukraine).
The grand prize of the special contest "Mirror" was received by the documentary "The Edge of Dreaming" by British director Amy Hardy - "For the artistry and masterful combination of cinematography varieties in the personal confession of the artist."
Within the framework of the II KMKF legendary guests and participants of the festival shared their mastership. Every day Kiev citizens and guests had the opportunity to visit the master classes, learn some interesting details of their life and creative activity, adopt personal methods and techniques of such famous masters of the cinema as: Otar Iosseliani, Stanislav Govorukhin, Marcel Lozinski, Vadim Perelman, Mieko Harada.
A striking debut at the film festival was the presentation of Ukrainian film projects with the potential for the international co-production. The event has become the first portent of the project of the First Kiev forum co-production, which will be held next year.
The patriotic gift for all not indifferent has become the project "My country – Ukraine” – the series of animated films created by young filmmakers, animators and artists. Peoples fairily informative series is called to form the national consciousness and pride for the country, helping to bring up future generation of Ukrainians.
II Kiev International Film Festival has just ended, and preparations for the III KMKF is in full swing, it is not surprising, as in a few years Kiev International Film Festival is expected to reach class "A". The President of the festival Bogdan Stupka, "You do not lose hopes, if necessary – wait for years, wait for your destiny. The same I can say about the film festival, that we hope, that the third, fourth, and at the fifth we will be able to make a name for ourselves worldwide!"
