Marta Meszaros was born in 1931 in Kispest, Hungary. In 1956 graduated from All-Union State University of Cinematography. In 1957–59 worked for Sahia documentary studio, started making science popularization shorts and documentary shorts. Her debut feature film ELTAVOZOTT NAP was produced in 1968. Her film OROKBEFOGADAS was awarded with Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival in 1975, KILENC HINAP won FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Festival in 1976. Autobiographical tetralogy, opening with the film NAPLO GYERMEKEIMNEK (1984) earned world recognition along with the Special Jury Grand Prize at Cannes Festival. Her critically acclaimed film NAPLO APAMNAK, ANYAMNAK was produced in 1990. In 2003–2004 Meszaros directed a film about Imre Nagy – A TEMETETLEN HALOTT.
